"The 10th UCSB Interdisciplinary and International Graduate Conference in French and Francophone Studies, May 14-15, 2010 "

The Department is pleased to announce that the 10th UCSB Interdisciplinary and International Graduate Conference in French and Francophone Studies, entitled: “Chance and Destiny,” took place on May 14-15th 2010. It was co-organized by four graduate students from the Department of French and Italian and the Department of Philosophy: Jullien Guillemet, Karen Turman, Michelle Kendall and Vasilis Tsompanidis. Conference participants examined the ways in which "Chance and Destiny" raise philosophical, historical and aesthetic issues; they developed conceptual and theoretical reflections on these two notions; andl analyzed cultural and artistic practices related to them.

The conference included ten sessions over a two day-period, including thirty participants, ten moderators, and two keynote speakers: Thomas Kavanagh (Yale
University) and Kateri Lemmens (University of Québec).
