This $1000 travel-study fellowship, which honors Professor Ronald W. Tobin, who served for forty-one years as a full professor of French at UC Santa Barbara, is intended for UCSB undergraduates who wish to pursue a research project in French studies in the summer or autumn of 2011.
Applicants must be either junior or senior French majors at the time of application, which must be made through the Department of French and Italian. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, and projects linked to study abroad with EAP are strongly encouraged.
Applicants need to submit a one-page proposal, including a preliminary budget, together with an unofficial transcript and one letter of recommendation from a TA or faculty member. The selection committee will be composed of two members of the French and Italian faculty and one representative from the campus EAP office.
The winner will be notified in March 2011, and will be formally given the award at the annual campus Pi Delta Phi ceremony in May.
The fellowship funds may be spent on research or related travel costs.
A detailed report on the research project must be submitted within one month of the completion of the project.
The deadline for applying for the Tobin fellowship is: January 31, 2011.
